Donna Jones, the Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC), for Hampshire and the IOW joined local MP Maria Miller, Basingstoke retailers and local business to discuss how to more effectively tackle crime against business, particularly shoplifting.
Maria said, "Shoppers and people who work in retail outlets are worried about being caught in a shoplifting incident. As well as the loss of stock to the retail owner, staff and shoppers are facing potentially threatening situations. They need to be certain the Police will be there if they are needed. That's why I am backing our Police and Crime Commissioner's approach. In line with the national Retail Crime Action Plan published by the National Police Chiefs' Council, Donna Jones is continuing to push a zero-tolerance approach in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight, with increased levels of additional monitored CCTV installations and facial recognition software already being rolled out."
Donna said, “My commitment to ensure Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has 650 more police officers than it did three years ago also means there is a lot more opportunity for police to focus on crimes that matter most to communities.”
