Basingstoke Community Food Link is a local volunteer led charity set up to collect food that cannot be sold by local supermarkets to make sure it doesn’t go to waste. Volunteers sort and repack the food and deliver it to charities, schools and play groups across Basingstoke, so that food doesn't go to waste and helps people who are struggling with the rising cost of living.
Maria Miller MP said, “It is great to see Basingstoke Community Food Link working closely with local supermarkets and as members of Fareshare and the Neighbourly Networks. As a result of the work they do, over five tons of food a week finds its way into Basingstoke family fridges rather than being consigned to waste in a biodigester or incinerator.
“We all have a responsibility to make sure the food that comes into our community is used well and not wasted. Basingstoke Community Food Link is a local success story making sure our community cuts waste and supports those who need help the most.”
Basingstoke Community Food Link’s Penny Dilley this year won a ‘Place To Be Proud Of’ award for her voluntary work. Penny works with local distribution hubs to ensure that every area of the town has food for fair distribution. Food comes in and out of the charity within twenty-four hours ensuring that fresh food gets to the distribution areas across the town efficiently.
Basingstoke Community Food Link are always looking for volunteers to help pick up food from supermarket partners, sort it and deliver out to distribution partners. If you can help find more information on their website - Community Food Link Basingstoke (bcfd.org.uk) .
