On Friday 24 June Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke, looked in on the first ever School Interpreter Conference to be held in Basingstoke. The Conference was a one-day event held at Queen Mary’s College for pupils from six Basingstoke primary schools, all of whom speak another language besides English, The theme of the School Interpreter Conference was the London 2012 Olympics, with the children all excited about next summer’s Games.
Maria said: “I was very interested to hear about this exciting event and meet the children taking part. The children’s language skills are fantastic, and they were clearly having a really enjoyable day together, sharing experiences and the activities.”
Maria added: “I was also really pleased to hear how excited the children were about London 2012. They were very much hoping to be part of the country’s Olympic experience and see the Olympic Torch being carried through this part of the country. I told them that I was trying very hard to make sure that the Olympic Torch Relay will come through Basingstoke.”
