SOUTH VIEW JUNIOR SCHOOL in Basingstoke has won a prestigious national award worth £1,500 for its Breakfast Club. The breakfast club attended the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament yesterday, where they were presented with their award by Sharon Hodgson MP, Chair of the School Food All Party Parliamentary Group. South View was chosen as the winner of the £1,500 prize after the panel of judges was impressed by the way the school used its club to accelerate pupils’ progress with reading.
Maria said: “I am delighted to hear that South View Junior School has been awarded the prize for Extra Learning at their Breakfast Club. Not only is the Breakfast club providing a healthy start to the day, it is providing pupils with additional learning opportunities. I think it is so encouraging that South View have made such wonderful use of this time early in the morning to support their pupils both physically and academically.”
Headteacher Mrs Sheila Pape said: “We were delighted to win this award. It shows that the hard work put in to create additional learning opportunities has paid off. We were so grateful for the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament, it was a very special day”. The school plans to spend the prize money on extra books, educational games, puzzles and sports equipment. Kellogg’s, whose breakfast club programme began 17 years ago, supports 2,500 breakfast clubs across the UK with training, cereal donations and funding so that schools can run a sustainable pre-school club.
